Change of welfare and theft legislation regarding domestic pets in Ireland

The Issue

Currently the theft of domestic animals and pets, in Ireland, does not have a specific code on pulse.  This means when our beloved pets are stolen they are treated the same as a stolen bike etc. This is not ok.

Our pets are family members, much adored, loved and as important to us as children. Many of us with Mental Health issues rely on our pets for emotional support and assistance.  Many people rely on pets to leave their homes and to manage to be independent. Theft of these pets is on the same level to many of us as kidnapping

Currently in Ireland there is a substantial increase in the theft of dogs.  We know they are either being sold in Ireland through the likes of Done Deal or being taken through the ports to the UK.

Sites like done deal are breaching legislation on a daily basis by allowing dogs to be listed without microchips or with fake microchips.

Animals are being taken through the ports without the correct paperwork and without paperwork being checked. I know this for a fact as 2 years ago I brought my dog into the country fully vaccinated with passport however it wasn't even checked.  I logged a complaint, I never got a response.

We want a full review of all legislation around domestic pets.

We want the theft of domestic pets to be treated as a stand alone crime and given a specific code on pulse.

We want tougher penalties for those assisting with the sale of stolen pets including companies like done deal.

We want puppy farms to be eradicated.

The sale of pets to be fully regulated

Penalties for those who handle and transport stolen pets

Tougher penalties for those who abuse animals.

Ban on sulky racing

We want all animals transported in and out of the country fully checked and staff at ports should be fully trained  equipped to check microchips
