We are asking that you sign in support of our ask of the university, they are listed below.
Categories for Change
Administration Efforts/Policy:
● Marquette University publicly recognize and apologize for the traumatic events that Black students experience on campus and the part Marquette has played in contributing to the experiences. This effort is restorative to the trust and relations Black students and their families have towards Marquette we ask that this is done before Fall of 2020.
● Release the number of Black students on campus each year and Marquette’s efforts towards recruitment and retention of Black students to the public Fall of 2021(Annually).
● Outline of No Tolerance of hate speech in Marquette’s student handbook by Fall of 2020.
● Black student representatives (minimum of 2) needed on the curriculum board and board
of directors to be made aware of and have the ability to voice concerns, opinions, etc.
about decisions surrounding diversity and inclusion on campus by Spring 2020. Recruitment and Retention:
● : Minimum of thirty Black students from Milwaukee Public Schools tuition funded by Marquette, recruited by a selected task force of Marquette faculty and Black student ambassadors Fall 2021. (Annually)
- Numbers (currently make up about 3.6% of undergrads)
- Milwaukee Community: MU should increase recruitment of black students from
Milwaukee
- Increases comfortability
● STEM specific program for Black students at MPS High schools and Middle schools by Summer 2021.
● Create a program similar to the one at Cristo Rey for students at predominantly Black schools on Milwaukee’s north side by Fall 2021.
● Change gears of the president’s initiative to recruit in Milwaukee County to the City of Milwaukee before Fall of 2020.
● Book Scholarship for Black Students by Spring 2021.
● Black Student Communal Space needed immediately before Fall 2020.
○ ran by paid Black Graduate Assistant
○ will be used for mentoring (bridge between Black graduate, undergraduate, and
incoming/recruited students), tutoring, student org. meetings and events
Core Curriculum/Mandatory Training:
● Coursework surrounding racial injustice must be implemented into the core curriculum for all students by Fall of 2021
● Mandatory bias training for all faculty, staff, and student employees by Fall 2020
○ Every Marquette employee, specifically advisors, counselors, etc. must know how
to respectfully and efficiently work with Black students.
Campus Climate/Sociability:
● Black Student Communal Space needed immediately before Fall 2020.
○ ran by a paid Black Graduate Assistant
○ will be used for mentoring (bridge between Black graduate, undergraduate, and
incoming/recruited students), tutoring, student org. meetings and events
○ the space must have at least 3 computers, 1 printer, 1 TV, and 1 microwave
○ *NOT IN THE AMU or COUGHLIN HALL*; another place on campus can be
used until a new space is either built or specifically reserved by year 2025
○ will begin the start of both a Black student tutoring program and a Black student
mentoring program at Marquette, consisting of black graduate, undergraduate, and
incoming/recruited students
● At least one Black speaker should be brought to campus each semester by Fall 2020
○ the Black speaker must be voted on by Black students
● Pay for Black undergraduate and graduate students to attend therapy at their place of
choice until a Black therapist(s) is employed at Marquette needed immediately by Fall
2020.
● Serve as an anchor institution by investing in and partnering with Black communities. Develop and strengthen partnerships with community based organizations, Black leaders, social and economic justice organizations by Fall 2020.
● Racial Justice and equity audits, within campus departments and businesses on campus to ensure that policies and institutional practices support racial equality and are making progress in dismantling racist policies that cause harm to Black lives and communities of color by Fall 2020.
● Invest and bring at least one Black owned business on campus by Fall 2021.
