Teach Local History in Indiana PA Schools

Teach Local History in Indiana PA Schools

The Issue

Our Indiana PA students are not being taught local history. This history should start with the Native Americans that were here before us, how they lived, the land purchases, where towns and streams got their names from. It should teach about the underground railroad, our coal mining roots, and why we are a central hub for power on the East Coast. They should learn about Jimmy Stewart, and how we were featured in Life Magazine, and what our town used to look like. They should be taught about the industry that was here, the Farming, about IUP as a Normal School, how we used to have an ice house to keep foods fresh. The list goes on, but how can you expect the youth of today to respect where they came from...if they know NOTHING about where they come from?
Though PA history is also important, It's time to put local history in the schools!
