Dismiss the Case Against Deputy Peter Peraza

On July 31, 2013, Deputy Peter Peraza, of the Broward Sheriff's Office, received an emergency call from 911 dispatch about a man roaming a local apartment complex armed with a rifle. After arriving on scene, Deputy Peraza and other members of the Broward Sheriff's Office located the man and screamed at him to put down the rifle. The armed man was unresponsive and at one point even aimed the rifle at police.
In response, Dep. Peraza did what any normal person would do, not to mention a police officer encountering an unresponsive armed subject - he defended his life and the lives of those around him. Tragically, this meant engaging the man with his firearm which sadly resulted in the loss of the man's life.
What was Deputy Peraza to do - wait for the armed man to start shooting before taking action? Especially in this day and age of mass shootings? What else are the police good for, if not to stop armed men with rifles in residential areas?
For his actions, the Broward County State Attorney's Office brought a criminal case to a Florida Grand Jury two years later - not when it happened, but when the political atmosphere against law enforcement turned negative.
In December 2015, the Grand Jury indicted Deputy Peraza with Manslaughter - a 1st Degree Felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
The purpose of this petition is to draw attention to this case and send a clear message to our elected State Attorney that the community does not support this prosecution because, while tragic, it was a justified shooting. While officers who unlawfully use deadly force should be held accountable, the facts of this case prove that Deputy Peraza did nothing wrong.
