Brachycephalic (flat-faced) dogs are currently in the news due to large scale campaigns to ban their breeding. Some of the most popular pet dogs are included in these breeds, Boxers, French Bulldogs, Bulldogs, Pekinese, Shih Tzu and Bull Mastiffs. These campaigns claim that brachycephalic dog breeds suffer ill health due to their physiology or body shape. They claim that these dogs suffer from breathing problems, skin problems and can's whelp (deliver puppies) naturally. Whilst it is true that SOME of these dogs are unhealthy, it is NOT true that they all are. Many breeders of brachycephalic breeds have been working very hard for many years to ensure that they breed healthy, moderate dogs who do not have any health issues, these dogs breathe well, enjoy exercise, do not have skin problems and whelp naturally. Many of the breed clubs linked to the breeds have launched voluntary health schemes to ensure that breeders and puppy buyers are educated on how to ensure the best care is taken to avoid breeding unhealthy dogs. Unfortunately, there are people who don't care about breeding healthy dogs, there are puppy farmers who churn out thousands of dogs in appalling conditions without any care for the dogs at all. There are people breeding these dogs purely for profit who often try to breed the most extreme examples of these dogs which they call 'exotics,' many of these dogs cannot breathe well and some can barley walk as they suffer from problems with their legs and backs, there are also people who illegally import these dogs and other breeds into the country often without properly vaccinating the puppies against terrible diseases such as distemper, Parvo virus and rabies. These people put all our dogs at risk.
The serious flaw in the calls for legislation against breeding brachycephalic dogs is that it will only affect the people who try to do the right thing. The people who care about the dogs they breed and these are most often the ethical, responsible breeders who are breeding the healthiest of dogs. When people cannot get healthy puppies from the best of breeders because they are not allowed to breed, it leaves the doors open for the unscrupulous breeders and criminals to cash in on the lack of puppies and the quality and health of the dogs around will diminish.
We, as breeders and owners of these wonderful breeds, some of whom like the Pug have been around since Antiquity, need to ensure that we protect the futures of these breeds by improving their health and well being with every litter born. We can only do that if the right people are allowed to breed and if the public are taught how to find puppies bred in this way.
I represent a group called Proudly Pedigree - fit for life! we encourage the promotion of the pedigree dogs and the highest standards of breeding and care. Please help us by signing the petition to stop to government introducing a ban on the breeding of brachycephalic (flat-faced) dogs.
