Legislate against retailers using non recyclable black plastic food packaging
The Issue
The black plastic food trays most major supermarkets use to package their more costly ranges of meat, vegetables and ready meals are extremely difficult to recycle and most local authorities do not have the facilities and so ban them from recycling collections; thus the majority end up in land fill. Retailers shouldn't be allowed to use these materials simply to make food look nicer. If a product doesn't warrant a higher price simply on the merits of its provenance or description, then putting it in a black plastic tray in an attempt to make it look superior and to persuade people to buy it just isn't justified.
These black plastic trays should be outlawed by legislation. This would prevent thousands ending up in landfill every day. Many people prefer to buy meat with greater animal welfare credentials but they shouldn't be forced to accept this unrecyclable plastic along with it.
