In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, college education has been moved online. It is in almost every instance that online college classes aren’t the same as face-to-face online classes. In the spring semester, we were all blindsided by the pandemic. However, this year we’ve all seen this coming, and IUP students have to pay full-price for classes that are widely accepted as not equivalent.

This semester, IUP students staying on campus have paid money for room and board. On August 3rd, IUP announces that only freshmen, graduate students and other select groups are allowed on campus- by their estimate, 1/3 of students. In other words, only 1/3 of students living on-campus are actually getting what they have paid for.

On August 3rd, the same day they released this plan, IUP proclaimed on Twitter in plain language: “No, we aren’t planning a tuition reduction.” They have been silent on reimbursement for room and board that they won’t be able to utilize, as well as activity fees that we won’t be able to use. This is unacceptable! IUP families, many of which have been negatively affected financially by this pandemic, must still pay full-price for a cheap imitation of college education over Zoom. They must also foot the bill for dorms they aren’t staying in, food they’re not eating and facilities they’re not utilizing. These families are in dire need of financial assistance from IUP in the form of reduced tuition and reimbursement of room and board. Help us to make IUP President Michael Driscoll listen to the financial needs of the IUP student body!
