When choosing a university to make my home for the next four years, Miami University stood out.

The smaller class sizes and focus on undergraduate education spoke great lengths about Miami’s commitment to its students. Even in ordinary times, with a simple phrase of Love and Honor or a bright red M sticker, we find camaraderie in our community. We find strength in knowing we all follow a shared Code of Love and Honor, and each “demonstrate Love and Honor by supporting and caring for [our] fellow Miamians”.

We are asking Miami University to find the love and honor in your hearts and embody the innovative spirit instilled in us as students in all disciplines across campus, and to find a different way- a way that doesn’t involve compromising our education by letting go of some of our most influential mentors and increasing class sizes beyond recognition.

Because we must protect our community if we are to keep Miami University true to its commitment for undergraduate education.

“Miami provides the opportunities of a major university while offering the personalized attention found in the best small colleges. It values teaching and intense engagement of faculty with students through its teacher-scholar model, by inviting students into the excitement of research and discovery.” - Miami University’s Mission Statement

When looking to make up for the immense amount of money lost due to the stress from this pandemic, not renewing the contracts of visiting/adjunct professors has seemed to be the obvious answer. We, as Miami students, have been taught to not accept the obvious answer, but to discover the right one.

Not only will this increase class sizes, taking away from our university mission of “intense engagement of faculty with students through its teacher-scholar model”, but this will drastically impact the quality of learning and Miami community as a whole.

We are asking you, as Miami students, Miami parents, Miami faculty, staff and alumni to recognize what it is that makes Miami so special- Our community. As a university, we continue to attract students and produce change makers because of the community created by all our faculty and staff. We recognize that this is an unprecedented and uncertain time. Everyone is making decisions with limited information. However, we absolutely cannot lose sight of the heart of Miami. We cannot sacrifice our greatest strength and ally in discovering what COVID-19 means for the future of our University. As Governor DeWine and President Crawford continue to remind us, we will get through this TOGETHER. We must keep our community together. We must remind ourselves what is at the heart of Love and Honor, and what it is that will bring us all back to a new normal when we return in the fall. We must protect everyone in our family and protect the unique aspect that makes our University special.

We appreciate your time and consideration.
