A member of a Panhellenic sorority at Miami University was found saying the following: “the only reason I didn’t get into DZ was because I talked to a n**** that day”. It’s been confirmed by multiple people she said these words. This girl has not been punished for her wrongdoings. The idea that Miami as a whole, Panhellenic, or her respective sorority specifically, has not reprimanded her for her actions is absolutely sickening. This is the idea of persisting racist behavior. Making it okay, giving it an excuse. A fellow Miami freshman, Tenudi Genana, posted a lot on her instagram exposing this girl, trying to bring attention to these incidents that were going unaddressed. The girl reported her to the school as a physical threat, while she sits on her phone saying these things halfway across the country from her. Tenudi was charged with disorderly conduct and endangering health or safety by the university, simply for bringing attention to the racist behavior that went undetained. The school is punishing a student for trying to correct racist behavior when they failed to punish the professor that was blatantly racist in Oxford, as well as failing to punish the girl who said that herself. This is unacceptable and I am disgusted to be apart of an organization and school that endorses and protects this behavior and let’s it go unreprimanded. If we sit idly by and allow our fellow classmates go unpunished for their racist behavior, and let Tenudi get punished for standing up and doing something about it, we are most certainly part of the problem.

Listening to Miami University and Panhellenic make empty promises to create an anti-racist environment, but not actively demonstrate punishments that will occur following racist behavior is extremely hypocritical and pointless. We’ve seen the efforts and statements made, but where is the direct action? Panhellenic claims they can’t handle judicial cases with a specific person in a sorority, so maybe this petition can. The girl who made that absurdly racist comment should face consequences. Sign this to ensure that. Sign this to urge more anti-racist ACTION.
