Miami: Metal Detectors at Nightclubs

The Issue

The recent shooting massacre at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando has left a resounding impact on Florida and it's local LGBT community. Miami is home to a vibrant and diverse population, comprised of residents and tourists from many different backgrounds. It would be negligent to assume that such a tragedy could not also occur in our own city. Requiring local nightlife venues to use metal detectors at the entry is a small investment for the overall safety and security of patrons who are just looking to have a good time with friends. Acting as both a screening method and a deterrent for potential acts of violence, metal detectors also send a message that the possession or use of dangerous weapons in a public place, particularly where a vulnerable or targeted minority population is gathered, is unacceptable... The shooting in Orlando has been called the worst massacre in US history after 9/11. It is now time to increase security efforts so that something of this magnitude does not happen ever again. The likeliness that such an event may be attempted again in the future is very high, and it is imperative that we build a safer community where all people are feel protected. Requiring metal detectors is just one small step, but it may be the first of many future initiatives to ensure that we never lose loved ones to violent crime again in our community. Please sign this petition and kindly forward it to your friends and family in our community and elsewhere. Please pray for our brothers and sisters lost and injured in Orlando this weekend.
