On September 25, 2016 a tragic accident took the life of José Fernández. NoT only was José Fernández a great baseball player, he was a great person. His love and passion for the game was untouchable like his pitches. His love and passion for life was the same. In the short 4 years he played for the Miami Marlins he touched so many lives! Having an entire section in the park dedicated to him, José's Heroes, the day he pitches name #JoseDay, winning the 2013 Rookie of the Year, becoming a 2 time All-Star, and being such a fun player to be around the Marlins need to retire his number 16. Not only do they need to retire it because of what he did one the field, but what he did off it as well.
José left communistic Cuba at the age of 15 after 4 attempts and being jailed after one of those attempts to try to live the American Dream. Dan Le Batard once said his story was a "rags to pitches" story that almost everyone in the Miami Community or anybody who comes to this country can relate to. He was a pillar of the community. Any chance he had to give back he would. If you read all the tweets, post, and interviews José was not only loved by the fans but by all of Baseball as well!
Dan Haren tweeted: "Jose Fernandez is one of the most genuine guys I've ever played with. He loved life, he loved baseball... he will be missed dearly."
Le Batard said: "He's sort of the American dream for the Cuban baseball player. This kid is a symbol for Cuban life and the things that can be accomplished in this country."
Freddie Freeman said: "That smile I'm not going to see anymore. That personality and that love of the game, the love of everything really. He was so accessible too,"
Ortiz said: "I don't have the words to describe the pain I feel,''
The City of Miami, The Fish Family, and MLB LOVED José! David Samson said at a press confrence "Jose is a member of this family for all time," Mr. Samson if this is true please we are asking you to remeber this great person by retiring his number 16 in the Marlins organization. Thank you!
