Bar, Nightclub & Event Association of South Florida started this petition to Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and

Many of us in the bar, nightlife, and events industry have seen our livelihood dramatically changed by COVID-19. We have watched everything we have ever worked for slowly disappear.   What the authorities do not understand and what has become very clear to us, is that it is a near impossible task to maintain a business like ours in a world where social distancing is required. The product that we sell IS socialization.

The industry understands that our government has a responsibility to protect the public. But we, as local business owners, are receiving mixed messages and the selective enforcement of unsuitable and inconsistent rules from City, County and State government is destroying the little capital we have left to survive.  Socially distanced nightlife and events are not viable. We need action NOW in order for our businesses to survive this pandemic.

We demand the government allow our industry (bars, nightlife, & entertainment venues) to open with reasonable restrictions - OR - provide financial relief through the various policies and laws that already exist such as Eminent Domain & Regulatory Takings.   The government, today, in fact has imposed a takeover of our businesses that has limited the use of the property to such a degree that it has deprived us of economically reasonable use, and as such, our businesses should be considered taken.  We call on the government to provide relief in the form of estimated revenues the businesses would have made while the restrictions have been in place so that we will be capable of returning to society when social distancing measures are no longer necessary.  Businesses who receive these funds would be required to keep 100% of their employee base and maintain payments to landlords, taxes, utilities and upkeep of the properties.

PPP was great for the eight weeks it was designed to keep employees working, but it did not address the fundamental issue of our actual business model and the trickle-down effect it has with landlords, banks, taxes, utilities and the structural support system that keeps the machine working.  Once restrictions are lifted and businesses like ours are allowed to open without regulations, funding ends and the  fight of operating a business in a capitalist economy continues.

There are ways to get through this as a country and a community, but we must demand that the government do more than just enforce unreasonable and inconsistent restrictions. Those who work in the bar, nightlife, and event industries work tirelessly, sacrificing weekends and holidays and have dedicated those days to producing events, providing entertainment, and hosting tourists and locals alike so that everyone can have a good time. From marriage proposals and graduation parties, to birthdays and anniversaries, 4th of July and New Year’s Eve parties, and so many other special occasions, our industry has been there to host and celebrate you. We provide a much needed and desired service, as well significantly contribute to the strength of our GDP, especially here in South Florida.

Help our industry survive today so that we can be here for you tomorrow. Take action now and sign our petition to demand change.
