I am very much assured that you have prepared very well for your exam and very soon you guys will be appearing in the GATE exam.
Through this mail I want to interact with you the different perspective from a different point of view
you know all the competitive exams are mind game this is all about managing the day
You must be watching cricket what do you observe there, same batsman lets say Rohit Sharma with same skillset makes a century in one match and fails in other match.
he's not able to score a century in every single match.
in first match he made 10 runs
in second the century came
How is it possible ?
Do you think his skills improved overnight?
There are many reasons behind this
but if i summarize then i can say
the day belongs to him when he get the century
The day he got century if u analyse fully
Starting from morning in fact previous night
the kind of sleep he had
the kind of food he had
the kind of people he interacted with
the kind of motivation he got
to whom he met? and got motivated?
how was his mental state?
while entering the field what was his mental state ?
was he under pressure?
had he the awareness of his strength AND WEEKNESS
WAS HE PLAYING ON HIS STRENGHTH?
WAS HE AWARE ABOUT HIS WEAKNESS?
WAS HE PRVENTING HIS WEAKNESSES?
YOU KNOW IF HE MANGED THE DAY AND HIMSELF ON THE DAY HE SCORES CENTTURY
EVERYONE OF US HAVE STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS
AS YOU GUYS GAVE MANY TEST SERIES
YOU WILL BE VERY WELL AWARE OF YOUR WEAK AND STRONG AREAS
YOU KNOW WHEATHER YOU GET RUN OUT OR YOU HAVE PROBLRM WITH ACCURACY !
A day before exam
Only one thing- your silly mistakes.
While solving test series questions or previous year questions or standard questions, you must have made silly mistakes (that's human nature). A day before exam, only look for your silly mistakes, especially the one you made again and again.
This is possible only if you made a separate note book for this. Don't worry, if you don't have one. And in this case, just chill. Don't dare to look for any new concept. This will only create a panic attack inside you. Believe in yourself. You've studied enough, don't spoil your hard work of a year or two by studying on the last day.
Take a bath, ask your mother/family member to cook for your favourite dish, play a game or two (I played GTA Vice city and completed 3 missions before my junior switched off the laptop ), be nice to everyone, listen your favourite music, go to the park in the evening and do some meditation.
Sit in a calm place, close your eyes, take some deep breaths and tell your body that you're capable of cracking the GATE, that you've gather enough knowledge and that you're confident to put all this knowledge in your exam tomorrow
And at night, try to get sleep of 6–8 hours. And don't forget to make a schedule of the D-day. Reach early by one hour.
You'll be nervous on the exam day and that's completely normal. Once you are in front of the desktop in examination hall, all that nervousness will evaporate within few seconds.
GATE requires application of knowledge, practice and fast problem solving using various results and tricks.
Thumb rule : Skip question as soon as possible when you find yourself nowhere close. Do not let any question eat up your time.
Answering the Paper in 3 Phases
· In the First Phase, do the easy questions. Those questions which you are confident of and sure that it will not take more than 3 min strictly. Skip the Hard & time consuming questions. At the end of first phase, If you had a decent preparation then the number of questions you have answered gives you the average score of 50-60 marks. Remember those were the easy ones and most of the candidates can answer them.
· In the Second Phase, take up those questions which you could not answer in the first phase. The questions might be time consuming (3-5 min). Might be a tricky word problem which you could not crack in the first phase. For all such questions you have the second phase. (Intermediate Questions) Your performance in this phase will help improve your rank. So focus and Concentrate.
· In the Third Phase, take up very difficult and time-consuming questions. Answering them correctly will improve your rank drastically. Questions for which you have no clue since you have either forgotten the formulas or do not know the concept should be dealt in this phase.
· Risk Factor comes into picture here. Make a smart guess of the option if you feel it is necessary otherwise there is no harm leaving them and start checking the previously answered questions.
Summarizing Phases & the Ideal Scenario :
· First Phase: 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes
· Second Phase: 30 min to 45
· Third Phase: up to 30 min
And one last thing, it may happen you can't solve 3 or 4 consecutive questions in the exam. At this time, keep yourself calm and without wasting your time any further, move on to the next question. It happened with me. As I was doing the paper I got 2 questions from production(one of my strongest subject) in a row but I wasn’t able to solve those two questions and after that I had the feeling of loosing my hope for that year. What I did was keep my emotions under control and move to the next questions. Luckily, I solved most of the questions and gained a lot of confidence. Later on, I was able to solve those 2 questions.
So, start with the easy ones, build some confidence and don't stuck on any questions. Keep your ego aside or don't panic. Mark it and solve it at the end. Believe me, it'll work.
Enjoy those 180 mins. GOOD LUCK CHAMPS.
