Stop the Vaquita from going extinct!
Stop the Vaquita from going extinct!
The Issue
Hello. I'm one of the founders of Our Green World, an organization dedicated to keeping the Earth green. Recently, it has come to our attention that the vaquita, a marine animal, is going extinct with only around 10 individuals left alive. We intend to send this petition to the government of Mexico so that they can reinforce the laws against illegal fishing.
I should tell you why. Vaquitas only live in the Gulf of Mexico. Unlike some other endangered animals, it is only endangered because of humans. Illegal fishing boats that use gill nets capture the vaquitas and sell them for over $1,000 USD. The design of the gill nets make it so that the vaquitas, who need air to survive, like a dolphin, suffocate because they cannot come up for air. We do not know if the nets were designed that way specifically.
The vaquita is a kind of dolphin, which is why it needs to breathe air, even though it lives in the water. But, very unlike the many main dolphin species there are, it is the #1 endangered animal on Earth.
I am well aware of the hostility between the United States and Mexico. However, I do not think that animals should be wiped out from the face of the planet, just because another species was mad at each other.
If you're reading this far, I thank you. I hope you will sign our petition.
