Save the vaquitas! We can't lose the last 10 of them!
The Issue
Vaquita is a small porpoise that can only be found in the Upper Gulf of California in Mexico. This species is listed as “critically endangered” by the IUCN. They are on the brink of extinction with only 10 individuals left surviving in the whole world.
The population of vaquita is diminishing rapidly. At the beginning of the 21st century, there were around 600 vaquitas venturing along the North American coast. Just 20 years later, the population shrinked by an alarming 94%.
How did this tragedy happen? Surprisingly, the biggest killer of the vaquitas is not climate change, the single most significant threat to the vaquita's survival are the gill nets which seem trivialized but are killing thousands of marine animals everyday and everywhere. The poor vaquitas get entangled into these nets, and drown to death. This threat is accelerated by illegal fishing in the Gulf of California. If we don’t act, it is more than likely that the vaquita will go extinct within the very near future.
We call on the Mexican government to fiercely increase the pace of removal of active AND abandoned gill nets in the Mexican gulf, to immediately and strictly enforce the ban of illegal fishing in this region, and to enhance the punishments related to illegal fishing.
We are on the edge of losing them, but there’s still a chance if we act NOW.
