Eradicate Racist Images in Animation

The Issue

My friends and I were thrilled to learn that MeTV was adding cartoons to their weekday and Saturday line up.  We waited with anticipation for the first three hour block, which aired in January 2021 and vowed to meet online every Saturday thereafter to watch cartoons together and catch up.

We are avid lovers of animation so the fact that we are over fifty and still watching cartoons doesn't bother us.  However, watching the programming through adult eyes opened our eyes to a few things.  Several cartoons, mostly Droopy Dog and Tom and Jerry, contain offensive depictions and stereotypes of African Americans - an exploded head turned into a character in black face with pickaninny braids, Jerry munching a cookie suddenly develops big saucer lips....I could go on.

We are not trying to cancel the cartoons on MeTV.  We are not even trying to cancel Droopy Dog or Tom and Jerry.  We are asking, however, that cartoons with offensive depictions of African Americans and other races/ethnic groups be removed from the station's programming.  Please stand with us and let executives at ME tv and its parent company, Weigel Broadcasting, know that racism of any kind will not be tolerated.  By signing this petition, you asking them to review their cartoons and remove those with derogatory images.
