Paedophilia is a condition characterized by a lasting pattern of erotic attraction which is predominantly directed towards prepubescent children. As such it may be considered a kind of sexual orientation.

Police units are often named by the crimes they specialize in. Naming a unit by people with a certain sexual orientation (paedophiles) may lead public to think that paedophiles are a group of criminals. This is misleading and harmful. For example it can make a paedophile who has problem controlling his urges afraid to seek medical help. It fuels prejudices against paedophiles. The prejudices lead to needless suffering of many paedophiles. They also have a very negative impact on mental state of many paedophiles which can increase the likelihood that these paedophiles commit a sexual offence. The Metropolitan Police Service has an obligation to avoid stigmatizing groups of people based on their sexual orientation.

Also MPS should not say it specialize on predatory paedophiles. The unit should focus on sex offenders against children regardless of their sexual orientation. MPS should avoid any statements that seems to indicate that MPS behaves discriminatory based on people's sexual orientation.
