Keep the Criminal Justice Center out of Antioch. We are tired of getting dumped on.
The Issue
How can you help?
Please sign this petition and ask your friends, family and neighbors to do the same. Share it on Facebook. Come to the June 2 6pm Council meeting downtown. We need to speak up and speak out. Our Facebook page has moved to Southeast Nashville United. Please visit that page to keep up with our efforts to stop this move of the CJC to our area. Here is a link to the Facebook page for everyone. You don't have to have Facebook to access it. https://www.facebook.com/groups/SoutheastNashville/
So why are we concerned?
Southeast Nashville United is a group of neighbors committed to making a better stronger and safer community for all of Southeast Nashville not just one district or area. The purpose of our group is to focus on the needs and concerns of our neighborhoods and the families that call this area home. So please stand with us as we fight for the rights of our communities. Southeast Nashville will no longer stand by and become the dumping ground for what downtown and other parts of Nashville do not want!
Everyone in Nashville should be concerned about the way Metro is trying to move the CJC to our area. The Criminal Justice Center is only 30 years old. The cost to repair it is less than the cost to move it. Not only would the jail move but also bail bonds businesses would pop up close to it. The South Police Precinct would have to move further out away from the most populated parts of Antioch. That building isn't very old and a waste of taxpayer dollars to tear it down and build a new one.
Citizens in in our area are concerned about the safety of our neighbors including children. While escapes are not frequent, they do happen. The jail would be in close proximity to our homes. Add to that the fact that inmates will be released every day, some with no transportation away from the area, there could be former inmates walking our streets where our children play. The inmates are supposed to get a bus pass but they are not required to take the bus.
Antioch and South Nashville has worked hard to improve our image, despite previous projects dumped on us. We are just recovering from the loss of the Hickory Hollow Mall and several big retail locations. Adding the Jail to our area will give us a new black eye that will affect property values and businesses that want to relocate here.
We we are a multicultural, multinational community. We love our diversity but the choice of our area for this project could be construed as racist or bigoted in the least. We do not plan to let all our hard work go to waste. The People of Antioch and South Nashville are prepared to fight back with our voices and our votes. Stop dumping on us.
