Help Metro Davidson County Schools have the graduation they deserve

The Issue

MNPS Seniors deserve a real Graduation ceremony. Not a drive by, not a virtual, not a hopeful possibility that a district wide in person ceremony may happen. These Seniors deserve to walk that stage being cheered on by family and friends just like all other past Graduates. These Seniors have earned this.

Surrounding school districts surveyed their parents, asking for input before making such a critical decision. All of our surrounding counties are postponing their in person ceremonies with late summer dates. This is what we want for our Seniors as well. The decision we received seemed like the easy way out for MNPS. We owe it to our Seniors to make an honest effort to find a better solution than what they have been given.

We understand we are bound by guidelines and restrictions. We think there are ways we can respect current health and safety guidelines and still celebrate this significant accomplishment in a traditional way. If other counties can make this happen for their Seniors, so can MNPS. If using the previously scheduled venues doesn't work out, most of our schools have football fields where more ceremonies can be held. Family attending can be limited, precautionary measures can be enforced.

Our Seniors have already missed out on some of what should have been the most memorable milestones of their lives. Please do not make the MNPS graduating class of 2020 miss out on the chance to take that final walk together. Please make an honest effort to give them what they earned.
