Hackney Council have decided to close Church Street to through-traffic in the daytime as of 20th of September 2021.

There will be gates installed in the main access points to Church Street denying access to all vehicles except emergency services and buses.

Although Hackney mentions that there is an ongoing conversation with local businesses to address any issues we were not consulted at all or made aware of this significant and imminent change.

After an already very challenging year for the hospitality industry this implementation will hurt our delivery services, it will make it harder for any suppliers to deliver to us, it will stop customers coming from all around London and beyond and it will put more traffic on nearby roads, like Seven sisters, which are already busy enough as it is.

While we strongly support a greener Stoke Newington, there are better ways to do this than hurting small local businesses, especially by consulting with them before implementing such drastic changes.

We ask for everyone’s support, residents and businesses, to help us stop this and initiate a conversation that involves all sides affected by this decision before it’s too late and Stoke Newington might lose more of its beloved shops and restaurants and isolate us from the rest of London.
