Since org.com isn’t really allowing me to edit my petition I decided I’d put it as an update so here is my updated petition that we are fighting for! I have added some grants that we can receive so it doesn’t have to come from the taxpayers for funding.

As a concerned alumnus, I am both heartbroken and angered by the tragic events that unfolded at Apalachee High School on September 4, 2024, when Colt Gray took the lives of four people—two students and two teachers—and injured nine others. The horrifying incident left students, faculty, and staff with deep emotional scars, including PTSD and anxiety. The fact that this individual was able to bring a firearm into the school is not only inexcusable but also highlights a major flaw in our current security systems.

This petition aims to call for immediate action to protect all students, teachers, and staff in schools across Georgia, with a focus on implementing comprehensive safety measures, improving mental health services, and securing funding at both the state and federal levels to ensure that these changes are both effective and sustainable. Our children deserve to learn and grow in an environment free from the constant fear of violence.

1. Strengthening School Security Across Georgia

While Barrow County has made the commendable decision to install metal detectors at its high schools, we must advocate for the same measure to be implemented in allschools across Georgia. Metal detectors at every school entrance are a critical step toward preventing weapons from entering our campuses. Alongside metal detectors, we also advocate for:

 • Secured entrances: Students should only be allowed to enter or exit the school through designated, secure entrances, with any attempts to breach these areas being met by immediate intervention from school resource officers (SROs) to assess potential threats.

 • Clear bookbag policy: A policy requiring clear backpacks will allow security personnel to visually inspect contents, reducing the risk of weapons, narcotics, or other dangerous items being brought into the school.

 • K9 officers: Studies show that K9 units are approximately 90% effective in detecting threats such as firearms or drugs, providing an additional layer of security to keep our schools safe.

2. Investing in Mental Health Resources

The mental health crisis in America is a driving force behind much of the violence we see in schools today. Increased access to mental health services is essential for early intervention and prevention. We must advocate for:

 • Increased funding for school counselors and mental health professionals: Schools must have qualified professionals on staff to identify and address mental health issues among students.

 • Comprehensive mental health education: Students and staff should receive education and resources that emphasize the importance of mental health, coping strategies, and how to seek help when needed.

 • Regular mental health screenings: Proactive screenings will allow schools to identify students who may be at risk of harming themselves or others and offer support before issues escalate.

3. Securing State and Federal Funding

The implementation of these essential security measures and mental health programs requires funding. We call on the State of Georgia to allocate funds for the installation of metal detectors, enhanced school security, and mental health services in all schools across the state. The U.S. Department of Education, as well as other federal agencies, offer various grants that can help fund these initiatives. Potential funding sources include:

 • The COPS (Community Oriented Policing Services) Grant Program: This federal program provides funding for law enforcement agencies, including school resource officers, and could help finance security personnel or equipment.

 • The STOP School Violence Act: A federal program that allocates grants to improve school safety, including funding for mental health services, threat assessment programs, and security upgrades like metal detectors.

 • The 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program: This program offers funding for after-school and enrichment programs, which could be used to fund mental health services or counseling initiatives that support at-risk students.

Additionally, Georgia’s state government must prioritize education and safety in its budget to ensure that every school across the state has access to these resources. This includes securing a dedicated fund for safety enhancements and mental health support.

4. Addressing the Nationwide Crisis of School Gun Violence

The school shooting at Apalachee High School was not an isolated incident. As of September 2024, there have been 45 school shootings across the United States, 23 of which resulted in injuries or fatalities. According to data compiled by Education Week, the total number of school shootings since 1999 is 417, impacting more than 383,000 students. Every day, 12 children die from gun violence, and another 32 are injured. These statistics show the urgent need for comprehensive action to protect our children and educators.

By implementing stronger security measures, improving mental health services, and securing state and federal funding, we can take the necessary steps to create safer schools for our children and ensure they can learn in an environment free from fear.

Conclusion

It is time for us to stand together—students, parents, teachers, and community members—to demand change. Our schools need the resources, security, and support to ensure that tragic incidents like the one at Apalachee High School never happen again. Let us make the safety of our children a top priority.

Please join me in advocating for stronger school security and mental health support across Georgia. Together, we can help protect the future of our students and create a safer, brighter tomorrow.
