The Issue

Earlier this year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company was rolling back content moderation policies around topics like gender identity and immigration, claiming they were “out of touch with mainstream discourse.”

He cited “recent elections” as the reason — but what he didn’t mention is the human cost.

Since then, LGBTQ+ communities — especially trans and nonbinary users — have faced a wave of increased hate, harassment, and disinformation across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

According to GLAAD, Meta’s rollback is “particularly extreme” and removes basic protections at a time when online hate is rising rapidly.

This isn’t about free speech. It’s about targeted harm, and Meta’s decision to scale back protections is putting real people in danger.

We call on Meta and CEO Mark Zuckerberg to restore explicit hate speech protections for gender identity and gender expression across all Meta platforms

Reinstate moderation standards that prioritize user safety, not political trends!

These aren’t just policies — they’re lifelines for vulnerable communities. Meta should lead on safety, not cave to pressure.
