Merrimack College Graduation: Walking the Stage

Merrimack College Graduation: Walking the Stage
The Issue
Merrimack College has recently announced that they will allow for the classes of 2020 and 2021 to have a graduation under the present circumstances. While this is great news, they have required that no student walks the stage to receive their diploma, which goes against the entire purpose of graduating and celebrating a huge lifetime achievement. Per the Massachusetts Government, "Graduates may be invited to walk across the stage individually and turn their tassel in lieu of receiving the diploma. Alternatively, diplomas and awards may also be distributed if bestowing the awards and diplomas is done cautiously (e.g. placing each diploma and award on a table as the graduate walks by to retrieve it)." Additionally, the entire campus is allowed to walk the halls near each other, sit in small classrooms together, and eat together with few restrictions. Graduating seniors should have every right to walk the stage, and there is no reason they should not be able to if it is cited in www.mass.gov that graduates can walk the stage in a safe manor.
