We are a group of youth activists who have recently been made aware of the word “niggardly” and its relatives including “niggardliness” and “niggard” carrying definitions in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. We write today to ask that this word and its relatives be removed from Merriam-Webster. Although its etymology differs from that of the racial slur it so closely resembles, the association with such a vile period of American history is a stain on the English language. The definitions of “niggardly” and “niggard” as “grudgingly mean about spending or granting” and “a meanly covetous and stingy person,” respectively, carry and perpetuate harmful stereotypes about Black Americans. Such tropes can have violent implications for Black folk, as recent movements have shed light upon. Synonyms such as “meager,” “inadequate,” and “scant” can easily replace “niggardly.” As the most utilized and trusted American English dictionary, Merriam-Webster surely contains alternatives to these words. We ask that Merriam-Webster display sensitivity and regard in removing “niggardly” and related words from its dictionary and thesaurus. 

Removing this word will not mean we've achieved justice. Justice will not be served until the police are defunded and the killers of Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, George Floyd, and countless others are convicted.
