The Issue

When my kids attended larger schools, they faced numerous challenges that took a toll on their mental and academic well-being. They cried daily, expressing their discomfort and dissatisfaction, mainly due to the overcrowded classrooms where teachers could not afford the individual attention each student deserves. The atmosphere was stressful, and my children, like many others, did not receive the help they desperately needed. Fortunately, due to the smaller size of Genoa Elementary, my child's experience transformed positively. They've grown more confident, love attending school, and have developed strong bonds with their teachers.

The proposal to merge Dunlow and Genoa Elementary Schools is absolutely essential to prevent both from closing. This merger would not only preserve the outstanding learning environment provided by smaller schools like Genoa but also ensure continued access to quality education for all our children. Education studies consistently show that smaller class sizes and tight-knit school communities contribute significantly to student success. According to a study published in the American Educational Research Journal, students in smaller schools showed a 13% higher rate of academic achievement compared to their peers in larger institutions. Moreover, students in compact school settings report lower instances of bullying and crime, which are rampant in bigger schools.

The merger would create a unified community where resources could be pooled, maintaining the personal and engaging learning experience that has benefitted children at Genoa Elementary. Teachers can continue to foster strong, individualized relationships with students, ensuring that each child can achieve their full potential.

It is imperative for the Wayne County Schools in West Virginia to consider this merger to protect the educational prospects of our children. We urge the school board and local policymakers to take immediate action to merge Dunlow and Genoa Elementary Schools, safeguarding the benefits of a small school education for current and future students.
