Demand Mercedes-Benz give loaner cars to customers until dangerous airbags are replaced
The Issue
After learning that my 2007 Mercedes C230 was one of the cars affected by the recalled and faulty Takata airbag, I called nearby Mercedes dealerships to see if I could get my airbag replaced with a safe and functioning airbag. I was told because the replacement parts are in short supply, it was not possible. July was the estimated date of repair, however, it could be longer. I asked if I could be put into a loaner vehicle until then because I do not feel safe driving a car that recently posted the SAFETY RISK: "According to Takata, in the event of an inflatorrupture, metal fragments could pass through the air bag cushion material, which may result in injury or death to vehicle occupants."
I did some research and found their have been 10 deaths and "about 100 people injured in Takata-related incidents" and that this is the largest recall in automotive history. Cars 2008 and older are more susceptible as well as cars in humid areas. Many other automotive companies, such as Honda, Acura, Mazda, Toyota, Nissan, and BMW, are giving rental cars to customers until the parts are available. However, both of the representatives told me Mercedes is not giving loaner cars out and referred me to Mercedes-Benz USA, who was making this decision.
Mercedes-Benz USA explained that they care about their customer's safety enough to send out the recall notices to warn people of the potential harm, but because no deaths have occurred in Mercedes cars, it is not an emergency and they are not giving loaner cars out, even to those who feel unsafe. Therefore, I and other Mercedes owners have no options but to drive in potentially dangerous cars until the airbag can be replaced.
I am appalled that the supposed high class and respectable company, Mercedes Benz, claims that they care about the safety of their customers but yet they refuse to assure people's safety and make the appropriate decision. I ask for your support to demand that Mercedes gives customers a safe vehicle to use until the potentially deadly airbag is replaced. It is the responsibility of Mercedes to put their customers in safe hands until the problem is solved.
