Mercaptans make Eight Mile, AL residents sick! EPA, update your toxic substances list NOW!
This petition had 245 supporters
Mercaptan exposure has been plaguing us for over 8 yrs. We have children that are sick, elderly are sick, and those with illnesses are suffering worse because of this spill. This big company refuses to clean this waste up and have offered pennies to our residents expecting to buy our silence. Despite our socio-economic status, Eight Mile Matters!
There has been no Federal oversight or enforcement in this matter. Mobile Gas has maintained that neither tertiary butyl mercaptan nor methyl ethyl sulfide, both chemicals added to their gas lines in Eight Mile (http://www.mobile-gas.com/community/eight-mile-community-faqs/ are on the EPA's toxic substance list. These chemicals need to be tested and classified ASAP to hold Mobile Gas accountable for cleaning up our community and addressing the many health issues we believe have resulted from our chronic exposure to them.
EPA can do that now under the Toxic Substance Control Act amendments recently passed (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/watchdog/ct-toxic-chemicals-epa-met-20160620-story.html but Eight Mile residents need EPA to make these chemicals a priority.
Please help us say Eight Mile Matters and ask the EPA to do what is necessary to put tertiary butyl mercaptan and methyl ethyl sulfide on the Toxic Substance List.
Please stand with us and sign this petition. Thank you!
