Mental Health Days for Kansas Teachers

Mental Health Days for Kansas Teachers
The Issue
To the Kansas State Board Of Education, Kansas State Legislature, and the Governor of Kansas
I, Miss Basehor Volunteer, urge Kansas Lawmakers and educational leaders to implement designated Mental Health Days as part of benefits and well-being policies for all Kansas Educators. Teaching is one of the most emotionally and mentally demanding professions, and educators are expected to meet academic standards, support students' emotional needs, and adapt to the ever-changing demands of education. This is all while maintaining their well-being. Some of the challenges of burnout, emotional fatigue, and mental health struggles are just many reasons why teachers are leaving the profession. By allowing teachers to take mental health days, and care for their emotional and psychological well-being we can:
- Support teacher retention
- Reduce burnout and absenteeism
- Improve classroom effectiveness and student outcome
- Promote a culture of mental health awareness in our schools
I believe that Kansas should lead the way in recognizing the critical need for supporting its educators' mental health. State leaders can enact legislation or policy that grants Kansas teachers a specified number of paid mental health days per school year, separate from standard sick or personal leave.
Let us show are teachers that their well-being matters
