For the last three years Berkley Lane, near Frome, has been closed to through traffic by order of a PSPO (Public Space Protection Order) to stop “antisocial behaviour” in the form of excess fly tipping. During this closure the lanes around here have become an enormously popular, safe, and relatively clean place for local people - individuals, couples & families to walk, ride, jog and cycle.

Now, with absolutely no consultation with residents, Mendip District Council has decided to open the lanes up again from the 22nd of February. The concrete blocks that currently keep the lane closed will be removed and once again the lane will become a rat run for traffic and no doubt the fly tipping will return. This alone, will impose a massive cost on the council for clearing up. Historically MDC have been paying up to £80,000 a year on clearing up this area! Why would they want to pay that again, from all of our Council Tax.

Especially now, in these difficult times, a safe place to walk, jog, ride or cycle is more important than ever.

We have a physical petition here on the lane for people to sign and over the last few days we have already collected over 80 signatures. Please sign online and help us to put pressure on the council to keep Berkley lane closed.
