Heads up for mental health!

The Issue

I have a goal which is to play a part in Kenya’s nearing success as a nation, I’m especially passionate about us achieving equity. My role is to take part in the improvement of our local mental health and well-being services. And I hope to be supported by the Ministry of Health, as this aligns with their suicide prevention strategy (2021-2026).

Did you know that WHO estimates Kenyan suicide rates at 6.1% per population of 100,000? This translates to about 4 suicides per day. Which is roughly 1460 people dead per year, there has been a lot of news reporting suicides in rural areas and unfortunately there aren’t clear statistics to back this up. Mental illness is a medical condition, yet not all insurances cover mental health services.

I believe that accessing facilities that support one’s mental wellbeing is a human right. Yet it is still viewed as an ‘unnecessary luxury’ to an extent. Well, I’m here to break the stigma around mental health that has built up over the years. I would love all rural areas in Kenya to benefit from my great idea eventually, however there must always be a starting point. My starting point is the Turi village in Molo, Nakuru county. It is located right outside St. Andrews school, Turi. There hasn’t been any alarming news, however it is extremely important to lay the foundations of mental health in communities as big and to leave them with mental health support structures in place.

It is possible to achieve a 10% reduction in suicide mortality by 2026. Supporting this idea will move us 1 step forward as a nation.

Kindly sign this petition and support me on my journey to promote mental illness awareness in Kenya, I will wholeheartedly appreciate this from you…Thank you in advance!
