In late 2014, Canada was given a rating of “D” on the animal protection index, one of the main reasons for which was our country’s “archaic anti-cruelty legislation.” In a bid to update this legislation, Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, Member of Parliament for Beaches-East York, has introduced Bill C-246 in the House of Commons. IF THIS BILL IS TO BECOME LAW, IT WILL NEED WIDE SUPPORT FROM MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT AND SENATORS. THIS IS WHERE YOU CAN HELP. By signing this petition (anyone can sign, you do NOT need to be Canadian) you are asking Members of Parliament and Senators to support Bill C-246. Please also take the additional important actions noted below, which are also crucial if this bill is going to pass.

THE PETITION, TO MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT AND THE SENATE OF CANADA:
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that you support Bill C-246 by voting in favour of the bill when it comes up for reading and adoption in the House of Commons and Senate.

ABOUT BILL C-246:
Bill C-246 would modernize our animal protection laws and bring them into the 21st century by doing 4 things:

1. ban the import of shark fins;
2. close loopholes and strengthen the Criminal Code's animal protection provisions; and
3. ban the sale of cat and dog fur within Canada and require labeling of source fur.
4. update the definition of bestiality to include all sexual acts between humans and animals (the current legal definition, as decided by the Supreme Court of Canada on June 9, 2016, must include penetration)
