Maintain 7 day Glenelg Police Station and Frequent Patrols in Glenelg

The issue

POLICE PRESENCE IN GLENELG You may be aware that South Australia Police have proposed to remove police presence in Glenelg and place responsibility for police responses and actions to crime and disturbances in Glenelg to the Port Adelaide precinct. The proposal is: that the office in Sussex Street will be staffed by one police officer and an admin person from 9am – 5pm, five days a week (currently 8.30am -10.30pm, 7 days a week). The streets will not be patrolled on a regular basis as occurs at present, and there will be no regular police presence in Glenelg at weekends. It has been the proposed that the police patrols will come from the Henley Beach police station. As Residents of Glenelg we have enjoyed an extremely safe environment over the past years with virtually no crime or violence. This is largely attributable to the work of the police officers at Glenelg Police Station and to the continuing police presence on the streets. Glenelg is a major tourist precinct for visitors, has numerous licenced premises and has events occurring constantly. It is imperative that its current reputation as a tourist and family friendly environment is maintained. Without regular police patrols and vigilance there is a serious danger that this will not continue. Dr. Duncan McFetridge, member for Morphett, has prepared a petition to the Members of the House of Assembly in Parliament urging them to maintain police numbers and operating hours at the Glenelg Police Station at current levels. Concerned residents can attend Dr McFetridge’s office at 4 Byron Street, GLENELG to sign the petition or to call him on 82946711 or sign the online petition and It will be delivered to Dr. Duncan McFetridge's office.
