CALL TO ACTION: ALL NEW YORK SUPPORTERS AND CONSTITUENTS OF CONGRESSMAN LEE ZELDIN Dear Quiet Skies supporters: It has seemed like an eternity waiting for Congress to resume deliberations of the FAA Reauthorization Bill. But fortunately, that time is approaching and we do expect to see movement on the bill this summer. That’s why it is so important that we strongly advocate for regulations to be included that will address our concerns about excessive aviation noise. To that end, Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO) has drafted an amendment (shown below in the sample letter) – referred to as the Polis Amendment to the FAA Reauthorization bill – that will restore local control at general aviation airports. We sincerely appreciate Congressman Polis’s leadership on this important issue. Now, in order to move the amendment forward, we need to enlist the support of a Republican co-sponsor. We have identified several potential co-sponsors, including Ken Buck (R-CO), Mike Coffman (R-CO) and Lee Zeldin (R-NY). Congressman Zeldin has taken a stand on the aviation noise issue in the past and we consider him to be a strong candidate. CALL TO ACTION FOR CONSTITUENTS OF CONGRESSMAN LEE ZELDIN (or Ken Buck, Mike Coffman): Please contact Congressman Zeldin and urge him to co-sponsor the Polis Amendment to the FAA Reauthorization bill. A sample letter is provided below. Please consider editing it to reflect your own voice and including a sentence or two from your experience, explaining how excessive aviation noise affects your quality of life and why it should be regulated/reduced/minimized. Thanks everyone! Contact Congressman Lee Zeldin: https://zeldin.house.gov/ Sample letter: Dear Congressman Zeldin: I am writing to ask you to co-sponsor the Polis amendment to the FAA Reauthorization bill(shown below), which would restore local control at general aviation airports. Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO) is the primary sponsor of this simple yet powerful legislation, which would provide the ability of local airport operators to adopt regulations to reduce the community noise impact from aviation operations. The discussion draft will undergo further revision and refinement to ensure broad support and eventual success. With your help, we can restore a fair balance of power between aviation interests and the rights of ordinary citizens in the community to enjoy reasonable peace and quiet in their homes. Will you support your constituents and our community? Please join Congressman Polis as a co-sponsor to this amendment. Proposed amendment to FAA Reauthorization: (a) IN GENERAL.—The owner or operator of a general aviation airport is authorized to restrict the number and type of aircraft operations occurring at the airport, including the days and times of such operations. (b) COMMUNITY INPUT.— (section under review) (c) FEDERAL FUNDING.—No Federal funds may be withheld from or denied to a general aviation airport based solely on an exercise of authority by the owner or operator of the airport under subsection (a).
