Call to Action

The Issue

This is a call for action to Member States to include youth delegates, particularly young women and girls in their national delegations to the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). Young people are already paving the way by acting as leaders in their local groups and communities. We are key actors of change, working for sustainable development and gender equality and are experts on the issues that affect us. But we need to voice our needs and priorities at the decision-making table, not from the sidelines.

We are calling for an official youth delegate, in particular a young woman, on each national delegation. We understand that negotiations on para 21 in the Methods of Work are now closed, so we are calling on Member States to support the call to include a new paragraph.

Proposed text
Encourages Member States to consider including youth representatives, particularly young women and girls, in their delegations at all relevant discussions at the functional commission of the status of women, as appropriate, bearing in mind the principle of gender balance and non-discrimination, and inter alia, to consider establishing a national youth delegate program.

Agreed language based on (E/CN.5/2015/L.5)
“Encourages Member States to consider including youth representatives in their delegations at all relevant discussions in the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council and its functional commission and at relevant United Nations conferences, as appropriate, bearing in mind the principle of gender balance and non-discrimination, and inter alia, to consider establishing a national youth delegate programme […].”
