Please Allocate Funds For a Skatepark at Laurelton Playground

The Issue

Many young people in southeast Queens skateboard! Skateboarding is now the third most popular teen sport -- behind football and basketball. Skateboarding is a great way to get kids out from behind their gaming systems and engaged in physical activity. There are presently six skateparks in Queens; none are located in southeast Queens. The closest skatepark to southeast Queens (London Planetree) is 6.5 miles away! Young people in southeast Queens deserve a skatepark. The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation likes to build skateparks where: 1) there is presently asphalt; 2) the asphalt area is underutilized; and, 3) there is evidence that skateboarding is already taking place. Laurelton Playground (Laurelton Playground Map) is an ideal location for a skatepark in southeast Queens because it satisfies all of the above criteria, it is in a highly visible location (just off the Belt Parkway), and it features an area that is large enough for a great skatepark.
