Melbourne City Council, please clean up AC/DC Lane and make it into a true monument to AC/DC

The issue

AC/DC are one of the greatest bands to ever come out of Australia.

Formed in Sydney in 1973, their hard-rocking brand of pub rock has seen them develop a massive worldwide following and set the blue print for 100s of rock bands - a lot of them Australian - that have followed.

As of 2010, they had sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, including Back in Black which has sold a staggering 50 million units worldwide, making it the second-highest-selling album by any artist – behind only Michael Jackson's Thriller – and the highest-selling album by any band.

On 1 October 2004, a central Melbourne thoroughfare, Corporation Lane, was renamed ACDC Lane in honour of the band. The lane is near Swanston Street where, on the back of a truck, the band recorded their video for the 1975 hit "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)".

Today, however, there are barely any traces of spray-painted images or posters of the band to be found in the area.

The lane way walls are covered in graffiti and ugly posters for upcoming events at nearby venues and garbage is strewn across the roadway.

I am urging the Melbourne City Council to clean up the area and turn it into a true monument to the band.

The band still has a massive following all over the world so getting local artists to repaint the area with images of Angus Young, Bon Scott and the band could turn the area into a major tourist attraction for Melbourne - Australia's first city of rock.

AC/DC are more than cultural rock ambassadors of the Great Southern Land.

Their hard work and tireless work ethic helped paved the way for practically every Australian artist that has followed in their footsteps to international success.

Their music is virtually ingrained in our cultural DNA. From Broome to Brissie, from Penrith to Perth and from Townsville to Toorak their rocking riffs unite us like no other band.

So come on, Melbourne City Council, Let There Be Rock and turn this Laneway to Hell into something that will leave us all 'Thunderstruck'!.

And the right to make a stand when another's rights are being neglected or overlooked. Stand up. Make your voice heard. You may think you are one small voice in the crowd, but that one voice with a chorus of others can make a deafening sound - and can hopefully, bring about real change....
