After initially promising a press conference to address the controversy about Melania's immigration process, the Trump campaign instead opted to tweet out a letter from lawyer Michael Wildes. The letter states that Melania did not participate in a photo shoot in 1995, and she received 5 consecutive H-1B visas following her initial B-1/B-2 visas. It goes on to state that she self-sponsored her green card as a model of "extraordinary ability." While this statement was offered as proof that Melania's immigration process was "100% legal," without original documentation, questions still remain. Namely: - Why did lawyer Michael Wildes claim in an Aug. 5 Univision story that "she had a green card based on marriage"? - Why did Melania have to return to Slovenia many times? The goal of this petition has been to provide the public with Melania's story, about the complexity and unfairness of the American immigration system. And for those who have followed this story, and have read the letter of Michael Wilde's, this has been an education of the loopholes, obscure visa requirements, and waiting periods that many endure to come here. But without Melania's own voice, or original documentation, the public is robbed of any sense of what this experience has felt like for Melania. This insistence that she was "100% legal" at all times defies the reality of attempting immigration. Many immigrants who go about the process legally become stuck, or undocumented because of factors outside of their control: loss of a job, misplaced paperwork, or unscrupulous lawyers rob many immigrants of their rightful citizenship. We'll continue to keep this petition open, as an encouragement to Melania to fully explain her immigration process, without judgement. When that happens, we will see the similarities between her story, and the stories of the millions who have been cast as criminals and rapists by this campaign.
