Alexandria Bishop started this petition to Meijer

Contrary to popular belief, fish are intelligent.
Bettas for instance have the ability to identify or recognize people and objects and make associations with patterns. These fish can still feel and show their emotions. Bettas and goldfish have even been known to learn tricks! Regardless of their intelligence, they are living beings that are being abused by Meijer. Grocery stores and their employees are not qualified to care for live animals. This petition is to stop them from doing so, much like Walmart and the public outcry causing them to stop selling live animals. We can make a change.
Meijer stores have been selling live fish for years. In this time, their stores are consistently filled with the corpses of dead fish, though at times they do their best to hide their abuse. This is not about a couple dead fish here and there but tanks FILLED with them. Bettas left in their filth, left to suffocate on their own excrement. Goldfish eating each other due to under-feeding. Dead fish left for weeks rotting away as the other eat away at their diseased bodies. These employees are not trained to care for live animals, nor should they have to at their grocery store job. The fish who are lucky enough to live, are sold with diseases and die within days or infect other tanks...killing more fish. Bettas are riddled with fin rot as well. If you need proof, simply search “Meijer Fish” on any social media platform and scroll through the thousands of photos and posts. Thousands of posts about this abuse at every Meijer location, thousands of reports, yet Meijer has done NOTHING. They say they’ll look into it but they never do. We need to stand up for the voiceless animals Meijer is abusing.
