Meet with NYC Mayor Mamdani to discuss food allergies and the safety of NYC kids
The Issue
My son has a life-threatening dairy allergy. In 2022, while at daycare, he was seated next to other children eating Goldfish cheddar crackers. I walked in and noticed he was having an anaphylactic reaction. Terrifyingly, no staff member recognized the signs. Despite my numerous discussions with daycare staff about the severity of his allergy, my concerns were dismissed. As a result, my son was hospitalized in the PICU for a week. This incident could have been avoided through appropriate oversight and understanding of food allergies and emergency protocols.
This isn't just about my son; it's about all children and families in New York City whose lives are at risk due to a lack of education on food allergies. We need to mandate comprehensive training for all staff in NYC daycares and public schools that covers understanding food allergies, recognizing the signs and symptoms of a possible reaction, managing emergency situations, and ensuring the safety and inclusion of students.
In addition, awareness must extend beyond the classroom. Our public spaces should also reflect an understanding of food allergies. Mayor Mamdani can play a vital role by urging NYC Parks to implement awareness signage in public playgrounds, ensuring that these areas are safe and inclusive for all children.
We need Mayor Mamdani to agree to a meeting with me and food allergy professionals to discuss the urgent need for mandated education on food allergies and the implementation of awareness signs. By signing this petition, you support life-saving measures and show that the safety of our children is a priority. Please sign and help us protect the health and well-being of children with food allergies in New York City.
