MedSurg 2 Final Exam Retake ICHS

The Issue

Thousands of yearly ASN students at International College of Health Sciences (ICHS) and supporters of nursing education believe that students should have the right to retake exams for nursing core classes if they fail or need another attempt. Just like how aspiring nurses are eligible to retake the NCLEX exam, it is only fair that we are given a second chance in our core classes as we try to prepare for back-to-back exams and accommodate limited clinical availability/openings surrounding exam days.

We are adjusting to meet rapidly changing clinical availability and deadlines put forth to book flights, housing, and travel throughout Florida's clinical sites. Many of us find ourselves within just 1 or 2 percent of passing lecture exams. We have put in countless hours of studying and dedication into our education. It is disheartening to see all our efforts go in vain due to one failed exam.

We do immense work for lecture alongside 10 page careplans daily for weeks of clinicals with changing shift schedules (and unnotified cancellations) around Florida by ourselves day and night. Improving lecture assignments to a higher percentage would benefit every one of us. Currently, when a student fails a nursing core class, they are required to retake the entire course and pay out of pocket to re-enroll. These core classes are non-transferable to other nursing schools. This not only puts an additional financial burden on struggling students but also hinders their progress towards becoming competent healthcare professionals.

Moreover, as nursing students, we often face numerous challenges outside academics. Some of us juggle full-time jobs alongside full-time studies while others take care of sick or elderly relatives. These responsibilities can significantly impact our ability to perform at our best during exams.

By allowing us the opportunity to retake exams for nursing core classes, we can ensure that hardworking and dedicated individuals do not get left behind due to one setback. This will not only promote fairness but also support better learning outcomes as students will have more chances to grasp and master crucial concepts.

We urge educational institutions and policymakers in Florida's healthcare sector to consider this petition seriously. Granting us the right to retake exams will empower aspiring nurses with equal opportunities for success without unnecessary financial burdens or setbacks.

Together, let's create an environment where every student has a fair chance at achieving their dreams and contributing positively towards healthcare excellence!
