Reinstate Medina Libraries' (MCDL) membership in the American Library Association (ALA)

The Issue

In its September meeting, the Medina County District Library Board of Trustees voted to revoke its membership and financial support for the American Library Association (ALA).

Membership in the ALA gives our local libraries many benefits, including a voice at the national level, expanded staff skills and services, human resource and managerial resources, information, and important library-related insurance.

Board member Mary Schultz proposed the resolution stating that the ALA supports defunding the police, despite the fact that the ALA's statement on police violence makes no mention of defunding:

Upon researching the ALA's facebook page, the movement to revoke funding appears to be driven primarily by right-wing extremists and bots. Let's not have our cherished library system associated with such nonsense. The library is a service to the entire community, not a tool for the political machinations of a select few.

The ALA has a long tradition of supporting first amendment rights and advocating for diversity, inclusion, and equity. Such rights are important for all of us, minority or not, and are rights we should be supporting, not hindering.
