Alison Sonstelie started this petition to Medical Instrument and Device Manufacturers and

Instruments and devices designed by Dr. Sims are used every day in operating rooms, clinics, and sterile processing departments around the world.

Dr. Sims, who is referred to as the "father of modern gynecology," developed his techniques by operating on enslaved black women without anesthesia.  Their consent was not required and they were often asked to assist in their own excruciatingly painful operations.  In addition, he also performed experimental operations on infants, with a 100% mortality rate.

In a time where caring for women's reproductive health was considered offensive and unsavory, his financial interests were being able to maintain "sound" slaves for white plantation owners, or slaves that were able to reproduce.  Sims cared more about the experiments than in providing therapeutic treatment, and he caused untold suffering by operating under the racist notion that black people did not feel pain.

Every time the instruments bearing his namesake are used, it is a grim reminder of his dark legacy in the medical world.

We are imploring medical device manufacturers and the medical community to change the name of instruments named after Dr. Sims, including, but not limited to, the Sims uterine curette, uterine sound, vaginal retractor, uterine scissors, and rectal speculum.  A committee of POC (People of Color) comprised of clinicians, surgical technologists, operating room nurses, and sterile processing technicians will determine new names for these devices.
