Journalists against Misogyny in Pakistan

Dear Shohaib Ahmed Shaikh (Chairman and CEO of Bol Network),

The addition of Bol to the media landscape in Pakistan is a welcome step. However, the journalists community in Pakistan would like to request you to hold your employees to a stricter sense of media ethics and standards.

The media industry in Pakistan is plagued by worryingly levels of sexism and misogyny. As a new entrant into the market, it is incumbent upon you to set a benchmark for the industry to follow.

We require a firm commitment from you to ensure that no employee of Bol Television network would publicly declare, encourage or endorse any misogynistic or sexist opinion.

On April 28th, 2015, one of your employees, Ali Kamran Chisti, tweeted a disgustingly misogynistic tweet about Ayan Ali. As an employee of your company he is a representative of your organization and such behaviour reflects extremely poorly on the entire Bol network.

We demand a public apology from Ali Kamran Chisti for the tweet and a firm statement from Bol clearly committing to the belief that Misogyny by any of Bol's employees will note be tolerated.

The Pakistani media continues to display an extreme prejudice against women. We request all CEOs of all media networks to curb down all such behaviour, and distance themselves from these disgusting opinions and behaviours displayed by their employees.

Mr Shohaib Ahmad Shaikh, if you fail to do this, I feel Bol would continue to perpetuate the same misogynistic ideas promoting oppression against women in society and we would not see the 'change' promised by your network.

We, the digital journalists community of Pakistan, demand strict action against Ali Kamran Chisti and a firm commitment from all media networks in Pakistan to eradicate any promotion of Misogyny on their networks or by employees of their network.

Thank You,

Shehzad Ghias
