Jennifer Smith started this petition to Medalla and

Medalla beer is a locally produced beer made in MAYAGÜEZ, Puerto Rico by the CERVECERA DE PUERTO RICO. It is largely recognized as the local Puerto Rican beer of choice making it consumed and enjoyed all over the main island and on the small sister islands as well. Medalla cans are packaged in plastic rings that hold a six pack of cans together. The plastic rings that conveniently hold the six pack together (including a nice little handle) are littered ALL OVER the beaches and the local environment of these precious islands. The plastic rings that Medalla uses in their packaging not only litter the environment. Marine animals from birds to mammals are impacted, not just from the entanglement risk before the rings degrade, but from ingesting micro-sized plastic particles that can eventually cause them to starve (by plugging up their digestive systems).

We ask Medalla to be a responsible local business and change their packaging to a more environmentally friendly option! Other companies are setting an example and leading the way. In 2016, the beer company Salt Water Brewery announced all their six-packs of Screamin' Reels IPA would be packaged with a compostable holder termed E6PR (Eco Six Pack Ring). The container is designed to be completely compostable when thrown away and edible if it enters marine animal habitats. It's made with some of the byproducts produced from brewing beer, like spent wheat and barley.

Corona announced in 2018, in an aim to help reduce ocean pollution, is playing its part by piloting 100 percent plastic-free six-pack rings. As reported by Packaging Gateway, the Mexican beer brand is collaborating with Parley for the Oceans to introduce biodegradable six-pack rings, made using plant-based fibers.

We live and work in nautical tourism in Vieques, Puerto Rico and clean up these plastic rings daily from our beaches. We want to continue to support our local brewery but want to know they are doing their part to sustain the beautiful island we all call home with responsible business practices!
