The Issue
Rama Setu (Rama's Bridge) is a chain of limestone shoals, between Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, off the southeastern coast of Tamil Nadu, India, and Mannar Island, off the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka. Geological evidence suggests that this bridge is a former land connection between India and Sri Lanka. Investigation by the Centre for Remote Sensing (CRS) of Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi, led by Professor S.M. Ramasamy dates the structure to 3,500 years.
No matter whether it is a natural formation or a man-made structure, but there is no doubt that it is a very anceint structure and is a part of our common heritage. It also has religious and cultural aspects associated with it. Hence, it is important to protect this structure.
