Meaningful Change to Hockey Culture in Nova Scotia

The Issue

Mayor Mike Savage and Premier Tim Houston have called for meaningful change as a requisite for hosting the IIHF Junior Men's Hockey Tournament 2023. Halifax is a funding partner as is the province of Nova Scotia. Halifax  has committed to holding the tournament, however with that comes an acknowledgment of the shadow and silence of sexual assault,non-state torture(NST), gang rape,  hazing, and disrespectful behaviour under scrutiny in the organization.  Beyond a staff report on a code of conduct at events, this petition is a call to meaningful action as our city and province benefits financially from the tournament.

We call on our municpal and provincial government to allocate revenue from the IIHF tournament to invest in sexual assault survivors and prevention reflective of a feminist lens.

These include*:

  1. immediate provincial investment in community-based sexual violence supports
  2. ensure that tournament sponsors invest in community-based sexual violence supports
  3. provide increased and sustainable funding for sexual assault centres in Nova Scotia
  4. work with athletes, sports organizations and Male Allies programs to address sexual violence in sports culture.
  5. provide funding and profit transparency, thus encouraging Nova Scotians to understand how "respect is valued at least as much as revenue."*

Premier Houston and Mayor Savage, please take action. The disregard of respect and protection in actions involving sexual violence and hazing is a culture that percolates the tragedies of on-going racism and misogyny. From the locker room to the tragedy of Portapique, it is our calling to address the intertwining roots of harm.

Signed
