Thomas Sprigg Wootton was a slave owner, who is famous for founding a county named after another slave owner. How dare we call ourselves “patriots” and continue to honor the legacy of a man who perpetuated the most vile act of American history. It is well past time the school be renamed for someone who represents the ideals of the community. This petition demands Montgomery County Public Schools take immediate action in renaming Thomas S. Wootton High School. It demands a transparent renaming process which includes the perspectives and voices of the community in the school’s renaming.
