Dear McDonald's,
It’s time to ditch the plastic Happy Meal toys.

Each day about 602,000 Happy Meals are sold in the U.S. That equals about 220 million Happy Meals each year (reference.com). With a majority of Happy Meal toys being plastic, 220 million Happy Meals means nearly 220 million plastic toys. Most of these toys are used for a short time before being thrown away. Plastics takes hundreds of years to decompose. At best, these Happy Meal toys fill landfills and stay there. They will still be there when future generations come and go. At worst, they end up in the environment where animals mistake the pieces of plastic for food. According to recent research from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, microplastics in the ocean reach depths of thousands of feet and submerged plastics are even more plentiful than the visible plastics in the great Pacific garbage patch (NPR, 2019). These plastics found in the oceans and on land are eaten by animals who mistake them for food. With so many dead and dying animals being found with plastics either in their stomach or entangling them, it is clear that our use of plastic is negatively impacting the world around us.

McDonald's, this is where you come in. You have a choice. You can choose to continue to have plastic toys in your Happy Meals in the U.S., or you can choose to do what you have already done in other countries: provide books or other items in Happy Meals. Books would directly benefit the children of the U.S. Having books in the home has been proven to improve children’s ability to learn letters, words, and basic literacy. Another option would be providing seeds and a small pouch of dirt in your Happy Meals. Seeds would provide an opportunity for children to learn about how plants grow and to grow their own food or flowers. Having either of these options would be much more beneficial to children and the environment than the plastic toys you currently provide in your Happy Meals. McDonald's, I encourage you to make the choice that is right for our children, the planet, and future generations.

Thank you,
Erika Probst
