Hello intrepid public fiber supporters. Here is my latest article about how our "leaders" are still playing games instead of giving us real progress like a Dig Once policy.
https://nwcitizen.com/entry/a-resolution-to-make-sure-nothing-gets-done
Again, our goal is the same. To demand real, tangible, results like the establishment of a real Dig Once policy and the installation of proper public FTTP (Fiber to the Premises) for all. Make no mistake, the private solutions they will talk about, even ones that advertise fiber, are nothing like the public networks in Chatanooga, TN, Hillsboro, OR, Anacortes, WA, Mount Venron, WA and more. How do we know? High accuracy network load testing, testimonials from users, and much more. So if they tell you there are new private solutions, they're lying to you because we've shared our results and the private providers are not equivalent to real public fiber infrastructure. In fact, they're not even close.
On the city front, the local Tiny Homes community is paying $400/month for a Comcast connection that doesn't come close to meeting their needs. COB public fiber is literally already running past the same Tiny Homes community, but public works director Johnston, in yet another blatant attempt to protect Comcast, is still refusing to let anyone use the existing public fiber, yet he somehow still has a job. He has demanded that if, and it's a big if according to him, they let someone use the public fiber that it has to be a private company, even though the COB does administer some public fiber connections itself to low income housing downtown. No matter what, Johnston is always trying to throw a bone to big telecom.
So please, write to your mayor and council members. Tell them we need a real Dig Once policy that meets or exceeds the standards in Mount Vernon, WA and tell them to hook up, at least the poor, to existing COB fiber. Also, tell them you want a proper testing standard developed based on load testing, like the RRUL network load test, and NOT based on the intentionally inaccurate browser based tests the FCC, state and big telecom use to protect special interests.
On the larger front it's pretty obvious that it's time to vote in completely different people. Virtually everyone coming up through the major parties seems incapable, unwilling, or too corrupt of give us the systemic changes we need. Still, I guess that's why they call them parties and not workgroups. Standing around, talking, and getting nothing done seems to be what both major parties are about, especially when it comes to infrastructure.
