I know, 2 updates in 2 days! I assure you this one is important too. In my latest article I reviewed the applications for the Broadband Advisory Group and picked out the ones that are from big telecom interests that are trying to make their way into the group. All are closely tied to upper echelon city staff. I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that it has been 219 days since the March 23rd lock-down, 358 days since Mayor Fleetwood was elected, and 301 days since he took office after agreeing to address public broadband concerns which he hasn't done yet even though we've needed them now more than ever. Since then much has happened, including our Public Works Commission and Director refusing to provide Open Access to our existing public resources during a pandemic, and dragging their feet on creating even basic policy like a Dig Once and Open Access policies even though they have several excellent ones to modify and adopt. So yes, they are dragging their feet. The rest is in my article. Yes, I acknowledged they are working hard, but so is every other worker. People that are not are on the cusp of losing their homes, not eating enough, and more. Places with public fiber are in better shape than we are. So since most COB staff tend to make more than 50% of the population, have excellent benefits, and work in safer environments than a lot of other workers that earn less than they do, maybe it's time for them to help the community that makes that possible. Just think about how safe a COB employee working from home is compared to our heroes in healthcare. The rest is in the article I've linked to this update.
